1. Buckingham Palace & Changing of the Guard
Why not take the time to visit the official London residence of Her Majesty The Queen of England. Buckingham Palace opens its doors to the public, giving us the chance to explore the lavishly furnished State Rooms and see some of the Royal Collection’s greatest treasures on display.
The Guards outside Buckingham Palace are world known, easily spotted by their traditional red tunics, bearskin hats and strong, serious domineer. These are real soldiers with proud traditions, with the dedication to protecting The Queen and Her home. The Changing of the Guard (Guard Mounting) takes place outside Buckingham Palace from 10:45am for around 45 minutes. It is a formal ceremony accompanied by music and occurs every Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
2. Westminster Abbey
Westminster Abbey is one of the world’s oldest churches, over 700 years old. The building is steeped in history stretching back over a thousand years and is an essential element to any trip to London. The Abbey has been the coronation church since 1066 and is the final resting place of seventeen monarchs. The Abbey was also the venue for the recent wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton.
3. Big Ben
Is it a trip to London without at least a picture with Big Ben? Big Ben is the name of the Great Bell that hangs behind the clock in The Elisabeth Tower. Known as the most photographed landmark in Britain, the tower has been seen in the backdrop to many Hollywood films.
However, don’t expect to hear Big Ben chime when you’re attending Concur FX London! Big Ben has recently been silenced! The Elizabeth Tower is having construction work for conservation purposes. To protect workers working on the bell and the tower, Big Ben has been disconnected, and will not ring for another four years (only for special events like New Year’s Eve and Remembrance Sunday).
4. Tower of London
The home of the Her Majesty’s Crown Jewels, the Tower of London (Officially Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London) allows you into history with a first-hand experience. Founded nearly a millennium ago, the tower was first seen back in 1078, with improvements and extensions constantly added. Over the years it has served as a royal palace, prison, armory and even a zoo at one point. The Tower is a treasure trove of English history, one not to be missed.
5. The London Eye
Officially known as the “Coca-Cola London Eye”, the London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel that sits on the South Bank of the River Thames. At a staggering 443 feet tall, and a diameter of 394 feet, the Eye is the best way to get a bird’s eye view of the whole city of London. With more visitors per year than the Taj Mahal and the Great Pyramids of Giza, it is Europe’s tallest Ferris Wheel, offering the highest viewing point in London!
